It’s not so summery in these parts yet, so to pass the time here are a few binge-worthy shows to watch and stream with a pint of ice cream and your favorite blanket.
For sheer fun, Nailed It (Netflix) is 20 minutes of comedian Nicole Byer, renowned chef Jacques Torres and a usually not-so-famous guest making fun of three home bakers as they try to recreate really difficult desserts. Hilarity ensues as the contestants bake cakes, dye fondant, pipe icing and try to win $10,000. Like eating a bon-bon, you can’t stop at one (episode).
Season 2 of Big Little Lies (HBO) is even better than the first as it explores the aftermath of last year’s dramatic finale. But what’s even more fun than the story is watching Meryl Streep and Laura Dern declare GAME ON for an Emmy. The acting overall is delicious; watch it now and we’ll handicap Emmy nominations later.
Fleabag (Amazon Prime) is a lost but very funny soul just doing the best she can to keep her head above water as she deals with tragedy, love and family. The show’s two seasons are poignant, devastatingly funny and incredibly honest about the emotional upheaval Fleabag experiences. Oh, and she falls in love with a priest.
Other suggestions: When They See Us, Ava DuVernay’s four-part series about five young men wrongly convicted in New York’s Central Park jogger case; Salt Fat Acid Heat, in which chef and food writer Samin Nosrat travels the world to explore the foundations of good cooking; Dead To Me, with Christina Applegate as an angry widow trying to solve her husband’s hit-and-run death and Linda Cardellini as a friend who isn’t quite who she seems. Delicious fun!
