Holiday-ish: Day 20

From today’s newsletter:

At my holiday house, we’re singing Let It Go every day.

Really? No, not really. I’ve never seen Frozen and I have a musical hating husband and two grown boys. But the idea is the same.

Usually this time of year I have a million things left on my to-do list. Presents to buy and wrap; dinner to buy/prepare/assign for 25 people; cards to send; tablecloths to iron; places to go and people to see. You know the drill. My family gets very creative at hiding from me as I overmanage the perfect holiday experience.

This year, I’m letting it go.

I have some burned out Christmas lights. I have no idea what we’re eating for Christmas dinner. Sorry everyone who has sent a card, I won’t be getting to that this year. I might bake some cookies. I might not. Did you just break an heirloom ornament? Let me help you sweep that up. No wrapping paper? We’ll just use newspaper.

I have let it go and it’s spectacular. Everyone around me thinks it’s spectacular too. It took all these years for me to focus on the important things and to learn that those things did not include yelling at someone to straighten a wreath or to put on nicer pants.

Next year, when I can buy presents that don’t have to be delivered to my front door or invite those 25 people over for Christmas dinner, I’m going to try to remember to practice what I’m preaching. If I don’t, could someone (who’s not in my immediate family because that could go south) remind me? If not, I’ll have to add it to my to-do list.
