Holiday-ish: Day 9

Dreaming of a holiday getaway to an alpine lodge in Switzerland? A Scandinavian cottage overlooking the fjords? Your very own pied a terre above the 6th arrondissement in Paris? Or maybe a cozy cabin in the woods for two.

Travel is certainly out this holiday season, but a girl can dream — and thanks to IKEA you can furnish your very own gingerbread getaway.

Exclusive for the 2020 holidays, folks who join IKEA Canada’s Family Club can order the Gingerbread Home Kit, a member-only box that includes cookie cutters in the shape of iconic IKEA furniture, plus easy-to-assemble instructions for every piece.

Fill your rooms with edible versions of the BILLY bookcase, JOKKMOKK table and chairs, LACK table, MALM bed frame, and STRANDMON armchair. Arrange the bookcase with gingerbread books (tiny rectangles) and scatter gingerbread pillows (wee little squares) on the chairs. You can even bake a RENS rug (shaped like a Christmas tree), then cover it with whisps of fluffy white frosting that, if you don’t look too closely, resemble faux fur.

Like true Canadians, however, the good folks at IKEA Canada wouldn’t dream of keeping this all to themselves.

For the rest of us, IKEA offers free printable templates with assembly instructions that anyone can download. Just cut out the templates, trace them on your own gingerbread dough, cut out the pieces, bake, assemble, and decorate.

It’s all there but for the arguing.

So decorate to your heart’s content. Then when you remember it’s still 2020 and you’re not really in Paris, start with the chair and just eat your feelings.
